Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a Graphic Designer and Art Director for various companies on Long Island. I have done sporting goods designs for Spalding, MacGregor, Halex and Mitre and packaging designs for Target, Sears and Walmart. I was an Art Director for Calvin Klein eyewear at an eyewear company where I created catalogs, press releases and displays for multiple countries. I worked at a bicycle company designing bicycles, catalogs and presentations. Throughout my career I have done freelance work for universities such as NYU and their collaborations in medicine with Mount Sinai Medical. I have volunteered for Cooley's Anemia, Tour de Cure, and Buffalo Boys and Girls Club as well as volunteering at nursing homes and with at risk youth.
I constantly have students ask, why would I give up designing to become a teacher? And I would say that I didn't give up my art, I just found a new way to share it with others. It was always my plan to eventually become a teacher, I just felt as though I needed to have some real life experience before I shared my love of art.
Besides my love of design (obviously), I also have some favorite mediums to work in. I love photography (35mm and digital), chalk pastels, oil paint, acrylic paint, charcoal, and pencil. More info to come and images of my artwork! https://joyrussoart.weebly.com
